This lesson will discuss the valuable role of clinical neurophysiology in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases in general and of peripheral neuropathy in particular. Starting with basic principles of nerve and muscle physiology, the lesson will progress to the modern techniques in use around the world. We will discuss normal physiology and then move to abnormal physiology including the differentiation between so-called axonal and demyelinating polyneuropathies. We will discuss the important role played by this distinction but also how it is abused for profit. At the end of this lesson, students should be able to describe the use of physiology in clinical practice, what to ask for in ordering this test, and how to begin interpretation of the collected data.
